Just the name Houdini would ring a bell to any magic enthusiast out there. Harry Houdini was best known for his sensational escape acts. Born as Erich Weisz, and was later known as “Harry Handcuff Houdini” or Harry Houdini. Houdini’s act caught the attention of Martin Beck, who later managed him and had him booked at some best vaudeville venues in the country, immediately followed by a tour in Europe. His stunts would usually involve the local police who would strip search, handcuff and lock him in their jails. He continued performing later in the United States. From handcuffs and straitjackets, he stepped up his game by using locked water-filled tanks. His greatest performance would be that of the Chinese Water Torture Cell. Suspended by his feet and lowered upside-down in a locked glass cabinet filled with water, he would try escaping whilst holding his breath for three minutes.
Another well-known illusionist and endurance artist is David Blaine. Blaine has his own television special Street Magic which was known to be the “best TV magic special ever done” wherein his idea is to turn the camera around to the audience so that the audience will be watching the audience’s reaction and where there is a “show within a show”. There are few memorable acts that made him more famous one was performed April 5, 1999 where he was entombed in an underground plastic box underneath a 3-ton water filled box for seven days. BBC News stated that, “The 26-year old magician has outdone his hero, Harry Houdini, who planned a similar feat but died in 1926 before he could perform it.” David blaine magic makes the audience go wild.
The next illusionist will have to be, yes, the famous Criss Angel. He developed interest in magic at the early age of seven and started performing little acts in the age of twelve. And, who’d have thought, his greatest influence is Harry Houdini as well. Just like David Blaine, he is also known for starring in his television show Criss Angel Mindfreak which showcases illusions like walking on water, levitating, floating, even surviving an explosion. In 2006, he performed alongside Cirque Du Soleil to produce Criss Angel Believe which became the best-selling magic show in the world.
Of course as a beginner you won’t be able to pull of large stunts like that of Blaine or Criss Angel just yet. However, here are some famous mind tricks that would certainly blow your audiences mind.
